"You whites are not very happy at home." At the Zambian border, the jet black Zambian, neatly dressed in a white uniform, opened with a smile our passports to cheque them. "Anyone who is happy at home, surely does not go away". Referring to the white travellers who passed his border. "Yes" we answered, "possibly this is true for many white travellers, but there are also people who travel to get to know other countries, peoples, and other customs". "Then I do understand why you travel on your bicycle", he laughed. And worried he said to me "But how do you get white again". Clearly this man felt the essence of travelling by bicycle: you feel, taste, smell, hear and see a country and become part of it, you feel at home there. Eat what they eat, sleep where they sleep and make do with what they have.
